Zines: The Underdog’s Expressive Outlet

8 zine covers. Titles include: "Biodiversity Volume 3: Seed Savers," "Indoor Cats," "Creative Compost," "Color Therapy," "Tidelines," and "You Have Something Worth Sharing."

In its simplest form, a zine is a self-published and often handcrafted magazine that focuses on any topic known to human and alien kind.

My friend introduced me to the world of zines during my graduate program in art therapy. I had been making books for years, and I was involved with a book making group that taught classes on complex and historical book structures. Still, something about these self-published forms of literary and artistic expression was really appealing to me. By taking a simple piece of paper, using a few folds, one can create a magazine about any topic their heart desires.

I was hooked once I began to research the history behind zines. Their connections with grassroots and underground movements are so cool!

Some people credit the sci-fi fans of the 1930s with establishing a zine scene. Others say that zines go back even further to include the work of Thomas Payne.

Zines are often a way for marginalized groups to find a voice. As someone who loves to route for those David’s facing the Goliaths of the world,, I am all in for a means of creative expression that highlights social justice or presents an alternative voice.

The punk scene of the 1980s created zines to express their countercultural messages. I was thrilled to find that the girl punk bands of the 1990s used zines to communicate about the misogyny they experienced within and beyond punk communities. I was so inspired that A Riot Girl weaving is currently under construction in the studio.

These days, you can access full zine libraries both on physical shelves and on the internet. Academic institutions, public libraries, and individuals curate their own zine collections.

At Art Equals, we have developed our own zine collection that is available online and is accessible to people with visual impairments who use a screen reader. Take a second to check out these awesome creations!
