Mosaics

Traditional mosaics have been around for centuries. Early examples of this art technique were used by the ancient Greeks. This art form utilizes pieces of tile, glass, or ceramics that are arranged in a pattern on a wall or other dimensional surface. They were often used to adorn temples or palaces. Artisans who create mosaics carefully select and arrange their pieces to create pictures that come together to look like a unified composition. Modern artists use all types of materials to create their mosaics, including paper, natural materials, and even old trash. Selecting and arranging these small pieces can energize the brain, while also helping you feel calm and relaxed.

Step 1: Select your tiles

Find a variety of paper squares that catch your eye. Look for your favorite colors or patterns that are interesting to you and set them aside.

Step 2: Arrange your tiles

Using the canvas board, arrange your tiles in any pattern you want. You can try and make a shape or picture, or simply lay out the tiles in a way that seems to please you. There is no wrong way to make your mosaic. You may even cut or tear your pieces into different shapes to help create more interest.

Step 3: Adhere your tiles

Carefully pick up each piece that you have arranged and place a small dab of glue on the back, and then stick it to the canvas board. If your pieces get shifted, simply rearrange them to fit them on the board again. When all your pieces are adhered, a layer of Mod Podge can be painted over the surface to seal the tiles and make a smooth surface.

Things to Think About:

What colors or patterns caught your eye? Do these colors or patterns remind you of anything?

Can you pick out any images or shapes in the pattern you created?

How would you like to live in a palace that had mosaics on the wall? What kind of imagery would your mosaics show?
