Prayer Flags
Prayer flags originated in Nepal and spread to other regions. They are traditionally seen in sets of five colors representing the five elements. When arranged in a specific order, they are said to bring about harmony. Decorated with symbols that represent prayers or mantras (sacred chants), the flags are often strung on mountain peaks because it is believed that the prayers will be carried throughout the world by the wind. Many people across the world turn to prayer to strengthen their faith and bolster hope. Are prayer or other spiritual practices an important part of your life?
Step 1: Decorate the Flags
With the folded flap at the top and facing the table, use a white crayon or colored pencil to decorate each flag with a symbol that represents a thought or prayer you would like to share with the world. You may also write a prayer or word, instead of a symbol.
Step 2: Attach the Flags
Flip the flags over so the flap is facing you. Place the string in the fold of each flap and then glue the flap down over the string. Do this for each flag spacing them an inch or two apart.
Step 3: Hang your Flags
Tie a loop at each end of the string and find a place to hang your flags. Curtain rods near a window might be nice so they can catch the breeze and carry your prayers or messages throughout the world.
Things to Think About:
What other faith symbols are you familiar with that represent prayer?
What symbol or message did you write on your flag?
Can you imagine this message or prayer being shared with the whole world? What might happen if it was?
