The Hamsa
This interesting hand symbol has been used in many religions to represent an aspect of protection. It may date back as far as ancient Egypt but has been adopted by cultures throughout the world. Its unique symmetrical, or mirror image hand shape is often decorated with an eye represented in the palm. This ever-watchful eye has held meaning for some, as God’s constant vigilance over us. The symmetry of the drawing can easily be reproduced by using both hands when tracing the shape. Try your “hand” at creating one of these iconic symbols and displaying it to bring protection and comfort.
Step 1: Drawing the Shape
Lay your hand on a piece of paper with fingers pressed together and thumb slightly out to the side. You can curve your thumb slightly to create a more interesting line. Using a pen or pencil trace your hand starting at the base of the thumb, following the outline to the tip of your middle finger.
Step 2: Switch Hands
Using the opposite hand of the one you started with, line your middle finger and palm up with the previous drawing. Trace the other side of this hand from the middle finger down to under the base of the thumb. Lift your hand away from the drawing and close the shape at the wrist.
Step 3: Decorate the Space
Using whatever materials you have on hand, decorate the interior of the hamsa shape with small designs. Consider drawing the eye in the palm or decorating with flowers, shapes, and other fun doodles. Fill in the shape with as many drawings as you like.
Things to Think About:
What designs did you use to fill your Hamsa? Do they hold a special meaning for you?
What other objects or images can you think of that bring people a sense of protection?
What images or objects do you remember from your childhood that helped you feel protected?
