Wool & Whimsy: Sew Your Sheep Scene
Time: 9:00am-12:00pm (3 hours)
In this creative and playful workshop, you'll bring a charming sheep scene to life using a combination of piecing, appliqué, and quilting techniques. The final product will be a delightful fiber art scene, perfectly sized to fit in your 8"x10" commercial frame with a 5"x7" mat opening, ready to display in your home or gift to a loved one.
Your woolly sheep will feature a felt head, legs, and tail, along with a fluffy, textured body made from homespun art yarn or colorful locks. The vibrant sun will be created from fabric and dyed locks of luxurious Suri alpaca or Teeswater wool, giving your piece both color and texture. This project is designed for all levels, and I’ll provide all the materials you need, including stabilizers, fabric pieces, felt, hand-dyed long locks, fusible web adhesive, handspun art yarn. You’ll have a piece ready to display in your favorite picture frame with a mat.
You can choose between two versions of this workshop and I’ll demonstrate both throughout:
Hand-Sewing Option: If you choose to hand-sew your sheep scene, please bring your favorite hand sewing needles, thread, seam ripper, and scissors. I’ll guide you through the techniques to assemble the appliqué by hand, creating a piece that’s full of personality and texture. (You can always add additional machine sewing at home.)
Machine-Sewing Option: If you prefer to use a sewing machine, you’ll need to bring a machine capable of both straight and zig-zag stitches, along with thread, a seam ripper, scissors, bobbins, and an extension cord. I’ll provide guidance as you piece and appliqué your sheep scene by machine.
An ironing station will be available for all participants, complete with the appropriate pads and sheets to help press your project as you go. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a framed, ready-to-display work of fiber art that captures the whimsy and warmth of a woolly sheep scene!
Price: $75 including hand-dyed locks, yarn, fabric, felt, adhesive web, and stabilizers. Additional materials and supplies will be available for optional purchase.
Prerequisite Knowledge:
For the hand-sewing option, participants should have basic hand-sewing skills, such as knowing how to stitch fabric pieces together.
For the machine-sewing option, participants should be comfortable setting up and operating their own sewing machine, and know how to sew fabric using both straight and zig-zag stitches.
